One Car Living. Are you possible?

After the headache, the tears, the frustration and every other emotion that came along in the last 24 hours or so, I think my husband and I have decided to do one car living. But every time I think about this situation, I ponder if it is possible to actually do. I know that I do not drive my car much to begin with. Once a week to Wal-Mart to get food and stuff for the house. Then once a month, as of now, to the doctors to see how our baby boy is growing. Really other than those two things, I only use my car when I am super bored and feel like checking out local deals or something. My husband would have the car Monday through Friday from 7am, and gets home at 5pm, so from those hours I would be without a car, which I am fine with. I would do my shopping on the weekend while I have access to the car. All my appointments are made at least a week in advance, so I would be able to let my grandparents know so I could borrow one of their vehicles, or let my mom know so she could take me. I know that if it is a true emergency, that I have so much family and friends within a few mile range, but if I needed a car right away, or a lift somewhere, I wouldn’t be too concerned about it.

I found a wonderful article here about one car living, which really made it seem more possible. I love how this article points out many different ways to get around town, such as the bus, or how walkable your neighborhood is. In my case, everything is pretty close, but due to it being the summertime in Florida, and being pregnant, walking the mile to the store isn’t what I want to be doing, but I know in the winter would be a lovely thing, and will help me lose the baby weight. I also never realized how much we truly do pay for my car to just sit in the driveway. We pay for registration, the plate, insurance and I drive it MAYBE 1,000 miles total for the year, yes I did just say for the year. It will be nice to save that little bit, though we probably won’t notice it, but that is okay. More money to us, and not to the man.

It wasn’t til after I read this article and showed it to my husband that it was final, and we were becoming a one car household. As a new mom, you really have no desire to do much of anything but get your rest and pamper your baby, so why do you need a car. Yes you want to show off baby, but not for quite a few. I know where I live, I don’t have to worry about it, because all the family and friends will be showing over quite often to see how baby and I are doing after he is here. I know in due time we might need a second car, but I think for now, having only one car is the best situation for us. We have the opportunity to save money, to not worry about my car breaking down while driving, and for our house to finally get in order.

Now the big question is what to do about the second car, my car, that we have sitting in the driveway in somewhat drivable condition. Well if you want to know more about our decision on that topic, you might want to check in tomorrow to see what we did. For now, here is my new ride.
